AWRA E-Mentoring Program

A practical way to encourage participation and advancement in the workforce

The success of any sport organisation is largely reliant on the skills and attributes of each staff member.  Sustaining success is influenced by the ability to provide a career path to senior management for experienced staff.

Mentoring has been identified as one practical way to encourage the participation and advancement of women in the workforce.

AWRA’s E-Mentoring Program is designed to assist women in middle management in sport to make the next step in their careers.

•    Mentoring is seen as a supportive ‘role-model’ based relationship whereby a more experienced person guides, encourages and supports an individual as she works towards identified aspirations and goals.

•    The mentor opens doors that might have otherwise been closed.

•    Each relationship is customised to the needs of the mentee and usually lasts between six months and two years.

Over the past three years, AWRA’s Mentoring Program has provided opportunities for over 100 women to form mentoring partnerships with female and male senior sport leaders.

The program was a recent 2015 finalist in a national leadership award for Sustaining Women's Empowerment in Communities and Organisations (SWECO).

What a previous participant said:

“My life has turned around since I started with my mentor, he has given me confidence, taught me about work, life, balance - although we will never get this right - plus he has given me an insight about myself and my achievements.”         (2013 Mentee)
